Busting the Tube: A Brief History of Video Art Questions

  • The reading explains how this movement of video as an artform arose out of smaller, cheaper, and more accessible technology and the social climate of the 1960's. One might say we are going through an interesting phase in our own society today and technology is more available than ever. With this in mind, do you see any forms of art and communication arising currently?
  • The early '70s were a time of experimentation in film, due to many new effects and complex technology. Artists were able to manipulate and make their images in new and innovative ways. Do you feel that we are beyond a point where we are still truly able to create new film techniques this way, or are there still new ideas to be found?

  1. Arising is interesting. Most anything that arises these days in such a fast moving, artistic climate is already there within hours. Ironically, what could be arising in this contemporary climate is a regression, where artists are going the DIY route and 'making' their own pieces. These could include their own robots, gadgets, and even analog pieces never considered before because there was no manual.. until now. With information widespread and the manuals to building any of our own objects of desire, the primitive idea of 'making' our own things may be what is arising. My two cents.

Yes and no to question two. Some argue that 'nothing is original' anymore. What IS original is the manipulation of everything that has even been invented. Postmodernism, to be blunt. Everything could most qualify as a found object now. Even techniques of any medium. Say we have two techniques, film or not, that have clearly already been invented and used thoroughly. But put together, these two stereotypical techniques could create something new and exciting.
